The Cumbow China Decorating Company, founded in 1933 by Mabel Cumbow Ruskin and her husband, Jacob Ruskin, was located in the small Appalachian town of Abingdon, Virginia, which is nestled in the Southwest hill country. There Mabel Cumbow Ruskin and a host of local women created the exquisite hand painted designs found on the china. Some of the designs were created from the imaginations of the many women artists and artisans she employed. Others were adapted from patterns found on antique china brought to the women for restoration from across the country.
